15 euros.

when we were in greece last summer, we made our first purchase for little william. at the time we didn't know anything about him...or really anything about pregnancy either. we had just found out i was pregnant the night before leaving for our vacation. at that point, will was just a fraction of what he is now...a little speck in my belly. (the miracle of growing a baby still astounds me.) we didn't know then how he would kick and tumble eventually, how he would give me heartburn and sometimes not "wake up" until 8:30am, when i would feel him move inside of me. we didn't know then that he was a boy.

it was our last night on mykonos island and we had enjoyed dinner in town. afterward we were strolling along the compact, maze-like cobblestone streets (i remember our arms were wrapped around each other's waists--how romantic!). we had 15 euros left that we were hoping to spend that night. we were leaving to go back to turkey the next morning and wouldn't be able to use the euro there. we strolled in & out of the little shops, casually keeping our eye out for something to buy and discussing how we could spend it (we'd already had dessert after dinner (gelato), the obvious first choice in a situation like this). we knew we didn't want or need any touristy souvenirs that filled some of the shops.

we walked down a little street where there was a display outside a shop entrance of beautifully crafted hanging stars. they looked so light & airy and something about them made me think of a baby nursery. i said this to andy--"these would be sweet in a nursery"--and as the words came out of my mouth, our eyes landed on a little handmade sailboat. we both thought it was adorable and talked about how we should get it for "baby," but we weren't completely sold.

we asked the shopkeeper, who had made it, how much it cost. "15 euros," she replied.

sold!

we knew it had to come home with us as a first present for our baby and a reminder of this trip that directly followed finding out we were expecting - this trip when we held such a special secret before telling family and friends. i remember talking about how what we'd just experienced would be a story we'll always tell and one that this child will always remember. i remember saying that it's moments like this when you recognize how funny and sweet life is.

we went back to our hotel and, once there, had to open up the package and look at the sailboat one more time before we climbed into bed.

now it's sitting in little will's nursery and feels as if it couldn't be more perfect.
