first introduction.

before our first ultrasound, andy & i always joked that we couldn't understand the
gray & white images of ultrasounds...and, more so, the way people gushed over them.
"all i see is a big blob."
"how am i supposed to know that's the face?"
i chuckled when reading this section from waiting for birdy. it seemed so dead-on.

"if you're pregnant with your first baby and have already undergone an ultrasound, i have a little secret to share with you. the baby will actually be born in color. for real! and not only that but also, god willing, you will never again see its internal organs! the ultrasound is just about the strangest introduction to a person i can imagine. as if, before you even met your husband, a salesperson had shown you a series of cross-sections of his brain, the lucky quartet of his heart chambers, a few black-and-white polaroids of his liver and spleen: you like?"

and then we had our first ultrasound for baby...

...and while there is definitely still something a little alien-like and funky about that first introduction to someone you will eventually know so intimately (and while i still love catherine's words)...when it's your baby, suddenly you've never seen something so precious and sweet.

file this under: "eating our words" or "the first time you realize there are things about parenthood that you used to judge or snicker about that you now understand."

i have a feeling that file's going to get pretty thick.
