the girl effect

the girl effect has come out with a new video
and we watched it last week in my
'international perspectives on women, gender, & health' class.
{talk about a mouthful.}
only in that class would people respond by saying that its deterministic view was off-putting;
that strong, cultural norms (ie, early marriage) don't always make education the magic bullet;
that 14 is such an arbitrary age in the grand scheme of it all;
that it's just pandering to the "us" vs. "them" mentality
of  "those poor, poor people" and all the rest of us.

our professor, who has studied these issues far longer
and more in depth than any of us,
brought up the good (and legitimate, i think) point
that nike, who sponsors 'the girl effect,'
(think what you will)
is good at marketing.
it's what they do.
and for the average "us", people who are shut off
from the horrors that are reality for millions of people,
this is better than nothing.
this little bit of light shed on the issue(s) is a start.

what do you think?

let me see if i can adequately and eloquently express my reflections on this: we must start somewhere. start the spread of positivity. start the empowerment. start the action. what i took from this presentation--and my own background in justice education and work with young girls--is that any source of encouragement and support can do a world of good in the life of a girl (regardless of age, right ladies)! so, right on, "the girl effect". keep streaming those positive and empowering messages, because it'll ripple.
